Complete Guide to Truck Sound Deadening
Truck audio and sound deadening services at American Fusion Wheels Kansas City

If you have ever driven your truck at highway speed and struggled to hear your music, take a phone call, or simply enjoy a quiet ride, you already know the problem that sound deadening solves. Trucks are inherently noisier than cars due to their larger body panels, higher ride height, and the tire noise generated by aggressive all-terrain or mud-terrain tires. Sound deadening transforms your truck cabin into a quieter, more comfortable space and dramatically improves the performance of any audio system you install. At American Fusion Wheels, sound deadening is one of our most requested services, especially for truck owners who have upgraded their audio and want to hear every detail.

What Is Sound Deadening?

Sound deadening (also called sound dampening or vibration damping) involves applying specialized materials to the metal panels of your vehicle to reduce vibration, block external noise, and control resonance. The sheet metal panels in your truck doors, floor, roof, and firewall act like drums, amplifying road noise and vibrations. Sound deadening materials add mass and damping properties that stop these panels from vibrating and transmitting noise into the cabin.

Popular Sound Deadening Materials

Dynamat

Dynamat is the most recognized name in automotive sound deadening. Their products have been the industry standard for decades, and for good reason:

  • Dynamat Xtreme: The flagship product. A butyl rubber-based sheet with an aluminum constraint layer that adheres directly to metal panels. It reduces vibration by up to 95% and is the most effective single-layer solution available.
  • Dynaliner: A closed-cell foam that adds thermal insulation and additional noise blocking. Often used in combination with Dynamat Xtreme for maximum effectiveness.
  • DynaPad: A composite material designed for floors that combines vibration damping and sound barrier properties in one product.
  • Price Range: Dynamat is a premium product. Expect to pay $150 to $300 for enough material to treat a pair of truck doors, or $600 to $1,200 for a full truck treatment depending on coverage level.

Stinger Roadkill

Stinger Roadkill is a popular alternative that offers excellent performance at a more accessible price point:

  • Roadkill Expert: Their premium product with a thickness comparable to Dynamat Xtreme. Heavy-duty butyl construction with aluminum facing provides excellent damping performance.
  • Roadkill Universal: A thinner, more affordable option that still provides meaningful noise reduction. Good for budget-conscious builds or secondary areas like the roof and trunk.
  • Price Range: Stinger products typically cost 20 to 40 percent less than comparable Dynamat products, making them an attractive option for full-vehicle treatments.

Other Quality Brands

  • STP (Standartplast): European-made products with excellent quality control. Their Bomb Aero product is thick, effective, and competitively priced.
  • Kilmat: A budget option that has gained popularity for its reasonable price and decent performance. A good choice for DIY installations where cost is the primary concern.
  • SecondSkin Audio: Premium products made in the USA with a strong following among audiophiles. Their Damplifier Pro is one of the thickest and most effective products available.

Where to Install Sound Deadening

Doors (Highest Priority)

The doors are the single most important area to treat, especially if you have upgraded your door speakers. Factory truck doors are essentially hollow metal boxes that resonate and flex when your speakers play. Sound deadening the doors:

  • Turns the door into a sealed, rigid enclosure that lets your speakers perform properly
  • Reduces wind noise and road noise that enters through the thin door panels
  • Eliminates rattles and buzzing from loose trim pieces
  • Can make a $200 set of speakers sound like a $500 set by giving them a proper enclosure

For truck doors, apply sound deadening material to the outer door skin (the panel facing the outside of the vehicle) covering at least 25 to 50 percent of the surface area. For maximum effect, also treat the inner door skin and use a closed-cell foam on the door card (interior trim panel) to block remaining noise.

Floor

The floor is the second most impactful area. Road noise, tire noise, and drivetrain vibrations all travel through the floor pan and into the cabin:

  • Treat the front floor area under and around the pedals
  • Cover the rear floor behind the front seats
  • Pay special attention to the transmission tunnel where drivetrain noise is strongest
  • Under-seat areas are important if you have a subwoofer under the seat

Roof (Headliner)

The roof is a large, flat panel that resonates with rain, wind, and general road noise. Treating the roof makes a surprisingly big difference in overall cabin quietness. It also helps reduce heat transfer from the sun, keeping the cabin cooler in Kansas summers.

Firewall

The firewall separates the engine compartment from the cabin. Factory firewall insulation is often minimal in trucks. Adding sound deadening to the firewall blocks engine noise, HVAC system sounds, and exhaust drone. This is especially valuable for trucks with loud exhaust systems where the exhaust note can become fatiguing on long drives.

Rear Wall and Wheel Wells

For crew cab trucks, the rear wall behind the back seat is a thin panel that transmits a lot of noise from the bed and the rear axle. Treating this area and the wheel well areas behind the rear seat significantly reduces the tire and road noise that reaches the cabin.

Cost of Professional Sound Deadening

Professional installation ensures proper coverage, clean adhesion, and no interference with factory components. Here is what to expect:

  • Doors only (both front doors): $200 to $500 including materials and labor
  • Doors and floor: $500 to $1,000
  • Full truck treatment (doors, floor, roof, firewall): $1,000 to $2,500
  • Premium full treatment with Dynamat Xtreme + Dynaliner: $1,500 to $3,500

Benefits for Audio Systems

Sound deadening is the most impactful upgrade you can make for your truck audio system. Even the best speakers and amplifiers cannot overcome a noisy, resonant cabin. Here is what sound deadening does for your audio:

  • Reduced background noise: Your music competes with less road noise, so you can listen at lower volumes and hear more detail.
  • Better bass response: Sealed, rigid doors provide a proper enclosure for midbass drivers, dramatically improving low-frequency response from your door speakers.
  • Clearer sound stage: With less interference from rattles and resonance, you can hear the intended separation and imaging from your speakers.
  • Less amplifier strain: When background noise is lower, you do not need to push your amplifier as hard to achieve satisfying volume levels.

At American Fusion Wheels, we offer professional sound deadening as a standalone service or as part of a complete truck audio system build. We also specialize in speaker upgrades that pair perfectly with sound deadening for the best possible listening experience in your truck.
