Jeep Wrangler Customization in Kansas City

The Jeep Wrangler is the most customizable vehicle on the road, and American Fusion Wheels is where Kansas City Wrangler owners bring their JK and JL models for professional-grade modifications. Our Shawnee shop has the tooling, parts inventory, and platform expertise to handle everything from a simple leveling kit to a ground-up trail build that transforms your Wrangler into a rock-crawling machine.

JK Wrangler Builds (2007-2018)

The JK generation introduced the four-door Unlimited body style that made the Wrangler practical for families and daily commuters. We build JK Wranglers with suspension systems from TeraFlex, Rough Country, and BDS that address the JK's steering geometry and maintain driveline angles at increased ride heights. The JK uses a track bar and drag link arrangement that benefits from adjustable components once the suspension is lifted beyond two inches. We install adjustable track bars, HD tie rods, and steering stabilizers to keep your JK tracking straight.

JL Wrangler Builds (2018-Present)

The current JL generation brought aluminum body panels, a wider track, and significantly improved on-road manners. It also introduced the 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder and the 392 Hemi V8 to the Wrangler lineup alongside the proven 3.6L Pentastar V6. Our JL builds take advantage of the platform's refined suspension geometry with kits from TeraFlex, Icon, and Fox that use monotube shocks, adjustable control arms, and progressive-rate springs to deliver excellent on-road comfort without sacrificing off-road articulation.

2-Door vs 4-Door Wrangler Considerations

The two-door Wrangler's shorter 96.4-inch wheelbase gives it superior breakover angle and agility on tight trails, but it also makes the suspension more sensitive to lift height — higher lifts amplify the tendency for a short-wheelbase vehicle to feel unstable at highway speeds. We carefully select spring rates and shock valving for two-door builds to maintain highway composure. The four-door Unlimited (116-inch wheelbase) is more stable at height but heavier, so we account for the additional weight in spring rate selection, particularly on the rear axle.

Rubicon vs Sport vs Sahara Upgrade Paths

Your factory trim level determines where your build starts. The Rubicon arrives with Dana 44 axles, electronic lockers, disconnecting front sway bar, rock rails, and 4.10 gears — a strong foundation that lets you focus your budget on suspension quality and armor. The Sport is lighter and less expensive, making it a blank canvas, but it will need axle upgrades and lockers for serious trail use. The Sahara sits between the two, with comfort features and styling but the same basic axles as the Sport. We map out the most efficient upgrade path for each trim during our free Wrangler consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about wrangler customization at American Fusion Wheels.

What is the difference between JK and JL Wrangler builds?

The JK Wrangler (2007-2018) uses a different frame, steering setup (drag link over the axle), and electronic system than the JL (2018+). The JL has a wider track, aluminum body panels, and a more sophisticated CAN bus system that affects how accessories integrate. Lift kit geometry differs between the two — JK kits are not compatible with JL frames. Our technicians select components specifically engineered for your generation to ensure proper fit and function.

Should I upgrade my Wrangler Sport differently than a Rubicon?

Yes. The Rubicon comes with Dana 44 axles front and rear, electronic lockers, a disconnecting sway bar, and 4.10 gears from the factory. A Sport model has Dana 30 front and Dana 35 rear axles with open differentials and 3.45 or 3.73 gears. For a Sport, we often recommend axle upgrades, lockers, and regearing alongside the suspension lift. For a Rubicon, you already have a strong axle and locker foundation, so the budget can focus on suspension quality and armor.

What size tires can I fit on a Wrangler without a lift?

On a stock JL Wrangler, you can typically fit 33-inch tires with minor trimming of the fender liner. The Rubicon fits 33s with no modifications. For 35-inch tires, a 2 to 2.5-inch lift is recommended. For 37-inch tires, you need a 3.5-inch or taller lift along with fender flares and potentially control arm adjustments. We help every customer find the right tire size for their lift height and driving goals.

How much does it cost to build a Wrangler at AFW?

A basic Wrangler lift and tire package starts around two thousand five hundred. Mid-range builds with quality suspension, wheels, tires, and front bumper run five to eight thousand. Full Wrangler trail builds with regearing, lockers, armor, winch, and lighting are typically ten to fifteen thousand. We provide detailed written quotes during your free consultation at our Shawnee shop.

Can you install a Hemi swap in my Wrangler?

We specialize in bolt-on modifications rather than engine swaps. For performance gains on the 3.6L Pentastar, we can install cold air intakes, exhaust systems, and performance tuners. If you have a 392 Wrangler, we offer complementary modifications like upgraded axles, heavy-duty cooling, and suspension tuned for the additional weight and power of the V8 drivetrain.

★★★★★
"I brought my bone-stock JL Sport in for a complete transformation. TeraFlex 2.5-inch lift, 35-inch KO2s on Method 305s, Smittybilt front bumper, and an ARB rear locker. The crew knew exactly how to set up the Sport's Dana 30 for trail duty. Incredibly happy."
