Leveling Kit vs Lift Kit: Which One Do You Need?
Leveling kit vs lift kit comparison at American Fusion Wheels Kansas City

If you want to raise your truck, two options dominate the market: leveling kits and lift kits. Both change the stance of your vehicle, but they work differently, cost different amounts, and serve different purposes. Understanding the distinction will save you time, money, and frustration. At American Fusion Wheels, we install both leveling kits and lift kits every week and can help you decide which one fits your goals.

What Is a Leveling Kit?

Most trucks and SUVs come from the factory with the front end sitting lower than the rear. This rake design helps with towing by keeping the rear from sagging under load. A leveling kit raises the front of the vehicle to match the rear height, creating a level stance from front to back.

Leveling kits typically raise the front by 1.5 to 2.5 inches using one of these methods:

  • Strut spacers: Polyurethane or aluminum pucks that sit on top of the front strut assembly. The most common and affordable option.
  • Coil spring spacers: Similar to strut spacers but designed for coil spring suspension systems. Common on Ram trucks.
  • Torsion bar keys: Adjustable keys that increase the torsion bar preload to raise the front. Common on older GM trucks and some SUVs.

What Is a Lift Kit?

A lift kit raises the entire vehicle, both front and rear, by replacing or modifying suspension components. Lift kits range from 2 inches to 12 inches or more and can include new springs, shocks, control arms, and other hardware.

Lift kits come in two main types:

  • Body lifts: Use spacers between the body and frame to raise the body without changing suspension geometry. Affordable but limited in benefit.
  • Suspension lifts: Replace actual suspension components to raise the entire frame and body. More expensive but provides real ground clearance and off-road capability.

Head-to-Head Comparison

Cost

This is where the two options differ dramatically:

  • Leveling kit: $200 to $600 for parts and installation. One of the most affordable truck mods you can do.
  • Lift kit: $1,000 to $10,000+ for parts and installation depending on the height and quality of components.

If budget is your primary concern, a leveling kit delivers a noticeable visual improvement at a fraction of the cost of a full lift.

Height Gain

  • Leveling kit: 1.5 to 2.5 inches in the front only. The rear stays at factory height.
  • Lift kit: 2 to 12+ inches all around. The entire truck sits higher.

Tire Fitment

One of the main reasons people modify their truck height is to fit larger tires. Here is what each option allows:

  • Leveling kit: Typically allows you to go up one tire size, such as moving from 31-inch stock tires to 33-inch tires. Some trucks can squeeze 34s with minor trimming.
  • Lift kit: Depending on the lift height, you can fit 33-inch tires all the way up to 40-inch or larger tires. A 6-inch lift on most trucks comfortably fits 35-inch tires.

Ride Quality

  • Leveling kit: Minimal impact on ride quality. Because you are only adding a spacer and not changing suspension geometry significantly, the ride stays very close to factory. Some owners notice slightly stiffer front suspension.
  • Lift kit: Ride quality depends heavily on the kit quality. Budget kits with blocks and spacers can make the ride rougher, while premium kits with matched springs and shocks can actually improve ride quality over stock.

Alignment and Wear

  • Leveling kit: A professional alignment is needed after installation, but the changes are minor enough that wear patterns on tires and suspension components are not dramatically affected.
  • Lift kit: Larger lifts change suspension geometry significantly, which can lead to accelerated wear on ball joints, tie rod ends, CV joints, and other components if the kit does not include geometry correction parts. Quality kits address these issues with new control arms and corrected mounting points.

Off-Road Capability

  • Leveling kit: Provides a small improvement in approach angle and allows slightly larger tires, but does not significantly change off-road capability.
  • Lift kit: Significantly improves ground clearance, approach angle, departure angle, and breakover angle. Combined with larger tires, a lifted truck can tackle terrain that a stock truck cannot.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose a leveling kit if you want to:

  • Eliminate the factory rake for a cleaner look
  • Fit one size larger tires (up to 33 inches on most trucks)
  • Keep your budget under $600
  • Maintain near-factory ride quality
  • Keep warranty concerns minimal

Choose a lift kit if you want to:

  • Run 35-inch or larger tires
  • Gain serious ground clearance for off-roading
  • Achieve a dramatically different look and stance
  • Build a truck that stands out from every other truck on the road

Can You Combine Both?

Not exactly. If you install a full suspension lift kit, it raises both the front and rear, so a separate leveling kit is not needed. However, some truck owners install a leveling kit first as an affordable starter mod and then upgrade to a full lift kit later when the budget allows.

At American Fusion Wheels, we carry a full selection of leveling kits and lift kits for all major truck brands. We also specialize in helping you understand the differences between body lifts and suspension lifts so you make the right choice for your truck.
