Jeep Tires for Wrangler, Gladiator & Grand Cherokee — Expert Fitment in Kansas City

Jeep owners are not like other vehicle owners. You bought a Jeep because you want capability, personality, and the freedom to go where pavement ends. Tires are the single most impactful modification you can make to your Jeep — and getting the fitment right requires more than just picking a size off a chart. At American Fusion Wheels in Shawnee, we have built and tired hundreds of Jeeps across the Kansas City metro, from lightly modified daily-driver Saharas to fully built Rubicons running 37-inch mud terrains on Dana 44 axles with 4.88 gears. We know the platform inside and out, and we will build your Jeep tire setup the right way.

Jeep Wrangler JL and JLU (2018+)

The current-generation JL Wrangler is the most capable factory Jeep ever produced, and its aftermarket support is massive. Here is what you need to know about tire fitment on the JL platform:

  • Stock Sport/Sahara (no lift): Maximum tire size is approximately 33" (285/70R17) without rubbing. The factory fender flares on Sport and Sahara are narrower than Rubicon flares, limiting outward tire poke.
  • 2"–2.5" lift on Sport/Sahara: Opens clearance for 35" tires (315/70R17 or 35x12.50R17) with proper backspacing. Minor fender liner trimming may be needed.
  • Stock Rubicon (no lift): Factory Rubicon suspension sits approximately 1" higher than Sport/Sahara and includes wider high-clearance fender flares. Most Rubicons can fit 35" tires on stock suspension with the right wheel backspacing (4.5" on 17x9).
  • 3.5"–4" lift on any JL: Required for 37" tires. At this height, you will also need extended brake lines, bump stop extensions, and potentially aftermarket driveshafts to maintain proper driveline angles. Fender flares should be upgraded to high-clearance style if not already Rubicon.

The JL's 3.6L Pentastar V6 produces 285 hp and 260 lb-ft — adequate for 35s with regearing but noticeably strained on 37s, especially with the automatic transmission. Regearing to 4.56 (for 35s) or 4.88 (for 37s) restores proper shift points and highway cruising RPMs.

Jeep Wrangler JK (2007–2018)

The JK Wrangler remains hugely popular in the Kansas City Jeep community, and aftermarket support is extensive. JK-specific fitment considerations:

  • Stock JK Sport: Fits up to 32"–33" tires without modifications
  • 2.5"–3" lift: Opens clearance for 35" tires on 17x9 wheels with 4.5" backspacing. The JK's inner fender liner is tighter than the JL's, so trimming is almost always required for 35s.
  • 4"+ lift: Required for 37" tires. The JK is heavier than the JL with more frame-to-body clearance limitations, making supporting modifications (driveshafts, brake lines, track bar brackets) more involved.

The JK's 3.6L V6 (2012–2018) benefits significantly from regearing with oversized tires. The older 3.8L V6 (2007–2011) is even more gear-dependent and produces less torque, making regearing practically mandatory with 35" tires.

Jeep Gladiator JT

The Gladiator shares the JL's chassis and suspension but adds the weight of a pickup bed and a longer wheelbase. Tire fitment is similar to the JL Wrangler with one key difference: the bed-to-fender visual proportion matters. Most Gladiator owners find that 33" to 35" tires provide the best visual balance. Going to 37s can make the bed look undersized relative to the tire diameter. Beyond aesthetics, the Gladiator's additional weight (roughly 500 lbs more than a 4-door JLU) means the drivetrain works harder with oversized tires, making regearing even more important.

Grand Cherokee Tire Options

The Grand Cherokee is a different animal than the Wrangler — it is a unibody SUV designed primarily for on-road comfort with moderate off-road capability. Tire upgrades for Grand Cherokees focus on diameter increases within the factory wheel well clearance:

  • WK2 Grand Cherokee (2011–2021): Stock sizes range from 265/60R18 to 295/45R20. A 2" lift or leveling kit opens clearance for up to 33" all-terrain tires (275/65R18 or 285/65R18). Popular choices include the Falken Wildpeak AT3W and BFGoodrich KO2 in these sizes.
  • WL Grand Cherokee (2022+): The new platform has slightly different clearance geometry. A modest diameter increase to 275/55R20 or 285/60R18 works on stock suspension. For 33" tires, a 2" spacer lift or spring lift is recommended.
  • Grand Cherokee L (3-row): The extended wheelbase model has its own clearance limitations. Consult with our team for model-specific recommendations.

Popular Jeep Tire Models We Install

Kansas City Jeep owners overwhelmingly choose these models, and we stock all of them in common Jeep sizes:

  • Nitto Ridge Grappler — The most popular tire on modified Jeeps in KC. Hybrid terrain tread provides aggressive looks with civilized highway noise. Available 33"–38".
  • BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 — The iconic all-terrain with 3PMSF snow rating and CoreGard sidewall technology. 50,000-mile warranty. The default choice for Jeep owners who split time between highway and trail.
  • Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T — Aggressive all-terrain styling with PowerPly3 sidewall construction. Bold lettering and serious traction make this a favorite on show-worthy Jeep builds.
  • Toyo Open Country MT — Hardcore mud terrain for Jeep owners who prioritize off-road performance over highway comfort. Open tread pattern clears mud aggressively.
  • Falken Wildpeak AT3W — Best-in-class value with 3PMSF rating, heat-diffuser technology, and a 55,000-mile warranty. The smart choice for Jeep owners who want capability without breaking the bank.
  • BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 — BFG's latest mud terrain with Krawl-TEK compound for wet rock grip. Linear flex zones allow the tire to conform to obstacles for maximum traction on technical trails.

Wheels for Jeep Builds

We carry Jeep-specific wheels in the 5x5 (JK/JL/JT) and 5x5.5 (older TJ/XJ) bolt patterns from Method Race Wheels, Fuel Off-Road, KMC, Black Rhino, Dirty Life, Vision, and more. The most popular Jeep wheel sizes are 17x9 with 4.5" backspacing for 35" tires and 17x9.5 for 37" tires. We also offer beadlock wheels for dedicated trail rigs. Every wheel purchase includes mounting, balancing, and hub-centric rings — see our wheel and tire packages for bundled pricing.

The Five-Tire Advantage

Unlike trucks and SUVs, Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators wear their spare tire on the rear tailgate in plain view. Mismatched spares look wrong and can cause drivetrain issues if you ever need to use them. We price Jeep tire sets as 5-tire packages so your spare matches perfectly — same brand, model, size, and tread depth. We also carry rear bumpers with oversized spare tire carriers for Jeeps running 35"+ tires that exceed the weight capacity of the stock tailgate mount.

Why Kansas City Jeep Owners Trust American Fusion Wheels

We are not a generic tire shop that happens to sell Jeep tires. We are a vehicle customization shop that understands the Jeep platform from axle to antenna. When you bring your Wrangler, Gladiator, or Grand Cherokee to our Shawnee location, you get technicians who have personally built Jeeps, who know the difference between a Rubicon Dana 44 and an aftermarket Dynatrac, and who will tell you honestly whether your current setup can handle the tire size you want. That expertise — combined with access to every tire and wheel brand in the industry — is why Jeep owners across Shawnee, Overland Park, Olathe, Lawrence, and the entire KC metro bring their rigs to us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about jeep tires kansas city at American Fusion Wheels.

Can I fit 35-inch tires on my Jeep Wrangler without a lift?

It depends on the model. A Jeep Wrangler Rubicon JL (2018+) can fit 35" tires on stock suspension with minimal to no rubbing — the factory Rubicon already sits about 1" higher than Sport/Sahara trims and comes with wider fender flares. A Wrangler Sport or Sahara JL will need a 2"–2.5" lift or leveling kit for 35s to clear without rubbing at full steering lock. Older JK models (2007–2018) typically need a 2.5"–3" lift for 35s regardless of trim. In all cases, wheel backspacing matters — we recommend 4.5"–5" backspacing (roughly -12mm to -24mm offset) for 35" tires on Wranglers. Our team can evaluate your specific Jeep in person and give you a definitive answer.

What is the difference between Dana 30 and Dana 44 axles for running large tires?

The Dana 30 front axle comes standard on Wrangler Sport and Sahara models. It is adequate for daily driving on tires up to 35" but has thinner axle shafts that can bend or break under aggressive off-road use with oversized tires. The Dana 44 front and rear axles come standard on Rubicon models and feature thicker shafts, larger ring gears, and stronger housings. For serious trail use on 35"+ tires, Dana 44 axles are strongly recommended. If you have a Sport or Sahara, upgrading the front axle to Dana 44 (or aftermarket alternatives like a Dynatrac ProRock) is a worthwhile investment before tackling rocky terrain. For highway-only Jeeps, the Dana 30 holds up fine on 35s with sensible driving.

What tires do you recommend for a Jeep Gladiator?

The Jeep Gladiator JT shares the JL Wrangler platform, so tire fitment is very similar. Most Gladiator owners run 33" to 35" tires for a balanced look with good bed-to-fender proportion. Popular choices include: Nitto Ridge Grappler (35x12.50R17 or 35x12.50R20) for the best blend of off-road capability and highway comfort; BFGoodrich KO2 (315/70R17 or 35x12.50R17) for all-terrain durability with 3PMSF winter rating; Toyo Open Country RT (35x12.50R17) for aggressive styling with reasonable road noise; Falken Wildpeak AT3W (315/70R17) for outstanding value and snow performance. Gladiator Rubicons can fit 35s with a 1"–2" lift; Sport and Overland trims need 2"–2.5" for 35s. We build Gladiator setups regularly — call or visit for model-specific guidance.

Do I need to regear my Jeep after installing 35-inch or 37-inch tires?

Strongly recommended for 35s, essential for 37s. Jeep Wranglers with the 3.6L Pentastar V6 come with 3.21, 3.45, or 3.73 gears depending on transmission and trim. On 35" tires, 3.73 gears feel sluggish — most owners regear to 4.56 for a significant improvement in acceleration and highway RPM. On 37" tires, 4.88 gears are the standard recommendation to restore proper drivability. Rubicon models with the 4.10:1 factory ratio are closer to correct for 35s but still benefit from 4.56 gears. Gladiators with the 3.6L follow the same guidelines. If you have the 2.0L turbo, gear ratios differ — bring your Jeep in and we will spec the right setup for your exact powertrain and tire size.

What about tires for a Grand Cherokee or Cherokee?

The Grand Cherokee WK2 (2011–2021) and Grand Cherokee WL/WK (2022+) are excellent candidates for tire upgrades. Stock sizes range from 265/60R18 to 295/45R20 depending on trim. For a modest upgrade, moving to a 275/65R18 or 275/55R20 adds approximately 1" of diameter without modifications. For more aggressive setups, a 2"–3" lift opens the door to 33" all-terrain tires. Popular Grand Cherokee tire choices include the Falken Wildpeak AT3W, Continental TerrainContact AT, and Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac. The Cherokee KL (2014–2023) can accommodate up to 245/65R17 on stock suspension or 30"–31" tires with a modest lift. We carry options for every Grand Cherokee and Cherokee variant.

What wheel backspacing do I need for Jeep tires?

Wheel backspacing is critical on Jeeps because it determines how far the tire sits from the suspension and body. For Jeep Wrangler JK/JL running 35" tires: we typically recommend 4.5" backspacing (roughly -12mm offset) on 17x9 or 18x9 wheels. This positions the tire for optimal clearance without excessive poke beyond the fender. For 37" tires: 4.0"–4.5" backspacing with wider fender flares (like the Rubicon factory flares or aftermarket high-clearance flares). Going below 3.5" backspacing creates excessive outward poke, which causes steering wander, increased bearing load, and mud/rock spray. We stock Jeep-specific wheels from Method, Fuel, KMC, Black Rhino, Dirty Life, and Vision in the correct backspacing ranges.

How much do Jeep tires cost installed at American Fusion Wheels?

Jeep tire pricing depends on size, brand, and terrain category. 33" tires (285/70R17): $180–$320 per tire installed. 35" tires (315/70R17 or 35x12.50R17): $260–$420 per tire installed. 37" tires (37x12.50R17): $350–$520 per tire installed. The fifth tire (spare) is included in our package pricing for 5-tire Jeep sets. All installations include mounting, standard balancing (or optional Road Force Balancing), TPMS programming, and torque-to-spec. We also offer full wheel and tire packages for Jeeps at bundled pricing that saves over buying separately. Call 913-291-2027 for an exact quote.
