AMP Research PowerSteps cost $1,200-$2,000 installed. That is 3-4 times more than basic running boards. Are they worth it? After installing hundreds of sets at American Fusion Wheels, here is our honest take.

How They Work
AMP Research PowerSteps automatically deploy when you open your door and retract flush under your rocker panels when you close it. Electric motors drive the mechanism. Built-in LED lights illuminate the step at night.
Pros
- Cleanest look of any step — invisible when retracted
- Best ground clearance — no step hanging below your rocker
- LED lighting built in
- Works on lifted trucks where regular steps are too high
Cons
- Price — 3-4x more than running boards
- Moving parts that can eventually wear out (motor, linkage)
- Takes slightly longer to deploy than a fixed step
Our Verdict
Worth it for lifted trucks. On a 6-inch lifted truck, regular running boards are still uncomfortably high for passengers. PowerSteps drop down to a comfortable height. On stock trucks, basic running boards are fine — save your money for wheels and tires.
