6 Warning Signs You Need New Tires (Don't Ignore #4)

6 Warning Signs You Need New Tires

Tires do not fail without warning. They give you clear signals that they are losing their ability to keep you safe — you just have to know what to look for. Some signs are obvious, but others are easy to miss until it is too late.

Here are six warning signs that your tires need to be replaced, starting with the most common and ending with the one most people ignore.

1. Tread Depth Below 2/32 of an Inch

This is the legal minimum in most states, including Kansas and Missouri. At 2/32 of an inch, a tire has lost nearly all of its ability to channel water, resist hydroplaning, and grip wet roads. Stopping distances increase dramatically.

How to check: The penny test. Insert a penny into the tread groove with Lincoln's head pointing down. If you can see the top of his head, the tire is at or below 2/32 — time to replace. For better wet-weather safety, many experts recommend replacing at 4/32 of an inch, especially in the Kansas City area where spring thunderstorms are common.

Every tire also has built-in tread wear indicator bars — small raised bars that run perpendicular to the tread grooves. When the tread surface is even with these bars, the tire has reached its minimum usable depth.

2. Uneven Wear Patterns

If one side of the tire is significantly more worn than the other, or if there are patches of heavy wear surrounded by areas with more tread, something is wrong beyond normal use. Common patterns include:

  • One-sided wear (inner or outer edge): Usually indicates an alignment problem. The vehicle is pulling the tire at an angle instead of rolling it straight.
  • Center wear: The tire has been consistently overinflated, causing the center to carry all the load.
  • Edge wear (both sides): The tire has been consistently underinflated, causing the edges to bear excessive weight.
  • Cupping or scalloping: Bouncing wear pattern that indicates worn shocks, struts, or suspension components.

Uneven wear means the tire cannot be saved — but more importantly, it means the underlying problem needs to be fixed before you install new tires, or the new ones will wear the same way.

3. Vibration at Highway Speed

Some vibration is normal, especially on rough roads. But a persistent vibration that starts or worsens at a specific speed — typically 55 to 70 mph — often indicates a tire problem. Common causes include:

  • A tire with a shifted belt (internal structural failure)
  • A tire that has developed a flat spot from sitting in one position too long
  • A balance issue that standard spin balancing did not fully resolve

Road Force balancing can diagnose whether the vibration is coming from the tire itself or from another component. The Hunter Road Force machine measures force variation that standard balancers cannot detect, and it can identify a defective tire before it fails.

4. Sidewall Cracks or Bulges

This is the one most people ignore — and it is the most dangerous. Cracks in the sidewall indicate that the rubber is drying out and losing its structural integrity. Small cracks are an early warning; large cracks or a visible bulge mean the tire could blow out at any time.

A sidewall bulge is caused by impact damage — hitting a pothole, curb, or road debris hard enough to break the internal cords. The air pressure pushes against the weakened area, creating a visible bubble. A tire with a sidewall bulge can blow out without warning, especially at highway speed or in hot weather.

If you see a bulge, replace the tire immediately. This is not something to monitor or drive on temporarily. Kansas City potholes are a common cause — if you hit one hard, inspect your sidewalls afterward.

5. Tires Older Than 6 Years

Rubber degrades over time from UV exposure, ozone, and heat cycling — even on tires that have been sitting in a garage with full tread depth. Most tire manufacturers recommend replacing tires after 6 years, regardless of tread remaining. Some set the absolute maximum at 10 years.

How to check tire age: Look for the DOT code on the sidewall. The last four digits indicate the week and year of manufacture. For example, 2519 means the tire was made in week 25 of 2019 — making it almost 7 years old in 2026.

This is especially important if you bought a used vehicle, purchased used tires, or have a vehicle you do not drive often. Tires can look perfectly fine on the surface while the rubber has become brittle and unsafe underneath.

6. Hydroplaning in Rain

If your vehicle feels like it is floating or sliding during rain — even at moderate speeds — your tires have likely lost too much tread depth to channel water effectively. Hydroplaning occurs when a layer of water builds up between the tire and the road surface faster than the tread can disperse it.

New tires with full tread depth can handle standing water at highway speeds. As tread wears below 4/32 of an inch, wet traction drops rapidly. Below 2/32, the tire is essentially a smooth surface on water.

In Kansas City, where spring storms can dump heavy rain on highways with limited drainage, adequate tread depth is not optional — it is a safety requirement.
